Elora Millhouse Restoration
Elora Gorge, Ontario · Completed 2024 · 5,400 sq.ft
A complete structural and interior transformation of an 1880s limestone millhouse perched along the Grand River. We stabilized failing stone masonry, restored hand-hewn hemlock beams, and introduced a minimalist glass and blackened steel extension that draws the gorge's morning mist directly into living spaces.

Transformation Challenge
When we took over the property, water infiltration and decades of unsympathetic drywall additions had suffocated the original 24-inch stone walls. Over 18 months, our team repointed the limestone using traditional hydraulic lime mortar, opened up cramped floorplates into double-height light wells, and installed bespoke thermally broken steel windows that celebrate the river views.
Design Intent & Light Strategy
To establish a reverent dialogue between raw 19th-century Canadian masonry and razor-sharp contemporary architectural insertions. Every modern element is articulated with crisp shadow reveals so new work never obscures historic fabric.
Artisan Craft & Engineering
Hand-troweled lime plaster throughout interior walls, salvage hemlock stairs pinned with concealed steel stringers, and custom hand-rubbed patinated bronze hardware fabricated specifically for the residence.
“The first time we walked in after handover, the afternoon sunlight poured across the lime plaster walls and highlighted every historic tool mark on the timber beams. We were terrified a contractor would turn it into a sterile box. Phinski made it feel like a living sanctuary.”
